Specific Medical Testing
of Workers Exposed to Various Chemicals
In the Workplace

Specific Medical Tests Regulated by OSHA
for Workers & Also Recommended
by CDC/NIOSH and other Professionals

INTRODUCTION

Specific Medical Tests Data of workers who are exposed to various chemical substances in the workplace are data that can be used by medical doctors, especially doctors who work in the industrial sector, or doctors in their day-to-day work, pharmacists, nurse professionals, scientists, litigation lawyers, investigators and other individuals who are involved with workers, patients, etc. on a regular basis. Such information is not generally available in the open literature or in books, nor can you obtain them by Googling.

Using a multidisciplinary approach from my various research experiences and my 30 years of experience at the Center for Disease Control and Research, specifically at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC/NIOSH) of the US Government, I decided to put forth a “Specific Medical Tests Poster", and provided complete detailed information on various chemical substances used by workers in the industrial sector.  This “Specific Medical Tests Poster “ stemmed from my presentation “Two NIOSH Resources  for Implementing  Workplace  Safety and Health Surveillance” and which were based on two publications:

  1. Occupational Sentinel Health  Events (SHE[O]): An Updated List for Physician Recognition and Public Health Surveillance. (1991).

  2. Medical Screening and Biological Monitoring. A Guide to the Literature for Physicians (1995).

Using these two resources, a Poster was created entitled "Specific Medical Tests and Examinations Published in the Literature for OSHA-Regulated Substances". Soon after, presentations were made at various conferences in the USA and in Finland,  Amsterdam,  England,  and in several States of India. This "Specific Medical Test Poster" was first published by NIOSH in 1997 and contained more than 200 chemicals.  I received requests  for over 20,000 copies of this Poster from doctors, nurses, researchers, and manufacturers from all over the world. This Poster was updated every time OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulated a new chemical substance and again the requests came, even following the latest Poster made in 2005, before I retired from the Federal Government.

In addition to my work in NIOSH, I gained a lot of experience  in developing “Safety  Cards of Hazardous Chemical Substances for the World Health Organization (WHO) , and was honored to be the only delegate from the USA to the WHO project. Each delegate country prepared a list of chemicals and developed Safety Cards; these were reviewed by the delegates of the WHO.

Also, following the 9/11 episode of the two planes crashing into the New York World Trade Center in 2001, I was chosen by the WHO to provide the Physical and Chemical properties, Health and Safety precautions for a list of 500 chemicals that were chosen by the World Body of WHO, and which could be associated with making Bombs, either individually or in combination with other chemicals on this list.

After retirement, I continued to update the “Specific Medical Tests Poster “ and started the translation of the information into Spanish, as we have many Spanish-speaking workers in the USA.

As of March 2023, the "Specific Medical Tests and Examinations Published in the Literature for OSHA-Regulated Substances" Poster containing 257 chemicals, in both English and Spanish, was made and is now loaded onto my website with a Full Glossary of Terms and References used in the Poster.

A File was created on each Chemical substance with Medical, Biological, Sampling and Analytical methods, in both English and Spanish, separately. The English File is “linked” to the Spanish File through the Mexican Flag presented in the English File and vice versa through the US Flag, and to an Alphabetical Index  to the Host Flag. The Files are available in “Google Drive" and the Posters are in print format, ready to be sold.

A “Sample” Poster containing all the 257 chemicals, complete with Glossary and References but with Medical and other data on only a few chemicals, is placed on my website free of charge, for your perusal.  In addition, in order to provide you with an idea of the content of the Files, three chemical files with complete Medical and other data are also placed on my website free of charge.

Details of the March 2023 Poster preparation are provided in the Section titled “Design of the Poster Using Specific Medical Tests and Other Parameters", including some information following the COVID –SARS pandemic and the subsequent changes to Spirometry testing of coal workers due to the close proximity of Coal workers and the Industrial hygienist who performs the Spirometry Testing recommended by CDC/NIOSH.

The following parameters are described in the Design of the Poster Section:

  • The Importance of Using the CAS Number of the Chemical

  • Use of Specific Timing for Medical Tests to be Performed

  • Examples of Workers Exposed to Specific Chemical Substances

Other details of the Poster information are provided under their respective pages:

Display on the wall for patients to see while they wait.
